The American shad (Alosa sapidissima) is an anadromous fish species native to the Atlantic coast of North America, migrating from the ocean into rivers to spawn. Historically abundant, populations have declined significantly due to overfishing, pollution, and especially the construction of dams that block spawning migrations. Conservation efforts include dam removal or the installation of fish passages, habitat restoration, fishing regulations, and hatchery programs. Despite some regional successes, many populations remain below historical levels, and continued management is essential to support recovery.
