Redfish, also known as red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), are a popular saltwater species found along the Gulf of Mexico and the southeastern Atlantic coast of the United States. Recognizable by their coppery-red coloring and a distinctive black spot near the tail, redfish are highly valued in both recreational and commercial fishing. While redfish populations were once threatened by overfishing, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, conservation efforts have been largely successful in restoring their numbers. This success is attributed to sustainable fishing regulations, such as catch limits, size limits, and seasonal closures, which have helped ensure healthy spawning populations.
