The bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) is a cold-water species native to the Pacific Northwest and parts of Canada, primarily found in rivers, streams, and lakes of the Columbia River Basin. This species is an apex predator in its ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health of freshwater habitats. However, bull trout populations have dramatically declined due to habitat destruction, particularly from dam construction, water pollution, and the effects of climate change, which reduces the cold water habitats they require. Conservation efforts include protecting critical spawning and rearing habitats, restoring rivers and streams, and enforcing fishing restrictions. As a result, bull trout are listed as "Threatened" under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in many areas, and ongoing recovery initiatives focus on improving water quality and connectivity between fragmented habitats to support their long-term survival.
