The cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) is a native species found throughout the western United States, Canada, and parts of northern Mexico. Named for the distinctive red or orange slashes on their throats, these trout inhabit cold, clear streams, rivers, and lakes. There are several subspecies of cutthroat trout, each adapted to specific regions, including the Yellowstone cutthroat and the coastal cutthroat. While cutthroat trout are an important species for both recreational fishing and as a food source for wildlife, they face significant conservation challenges. Efforts to conserve cutthroat trout include protecting and restoring freshwater habitats, enhancing genetic integrity by preventing hybridization with non-native trout, and regulating fishing to ensure sustainable populations.
