The Gila trout (Oncorhynchus gilae) is a rare and brightly colored trout native to the streams and rivers of the Gila River Basin in the southwestern United States, particularly in New Mexico and Arizona. Known for its golden-yellow hue and speckled body, the Gila trout once thrived in the headwaters of the Gila River but has faced significant population declines due to habitat destruction, and overfishing. By the mid-1900s, the Gila trout was considered nearly extinct in the wild. However, successful conservation efforts, including the establishment of protected habitats, hatchery programs, and the removal of invasive species, have allowed populations to gradually recover. Ongoing recovery efforts focus on improving water quality, restoring native habitats, and managing fish populations to prevent hybridization and ensure the long-term survival of Gila trout in its native range.
