The humpback chub (Gila cypha) is an endangered fish species native to the Colorado River and its tributaries, primarily found in the Grand Canyon and upper reaches of the Colorado River Basin. Recognizable by its distinctive, hump-shaped dorsal profile, the humpback chub historically thrived in the swift, turbulent waters of the Colorado River and its deep, fast-moving tributaries. However, the species has been severely impacted by habitat alterations caused by dam construction, water diversion, and the introduction of non-native fish species, which have outcompeted or preyed upon them. Furthermore, changes in water temperature, flow patterns, and sedimentation due to human activities have disrupted the chub’s spawning and feeding habitats. Conservation efforts are focused on habitat restoration, improving water flow management, and controlling invasive species. Successful breeding and stocking programs, along with efforts to restore the natural flow of the Colorado River, are helping to stabilize the population. Ongoing monitoring and protection are vital to ensuring the species' survival and long-term recovery.
